So much for wishful thinking - Video

So much for wishful thinking

After taking a week off I came back with every intention to have a good winning session.  Expecting that with a good nights sleep, a nap in the afternoon, and a new baby I would have some kind of luck.  I had every intention on titling this post, "Home in time for Starbucks!"  Well so much for wishful thinking...I played for just over 6 hours with a break in the middle.  I was what many poker players call "card dead,"  In the time that I was at the poker table I caught only two good hands.  The other hands I was getting were small pocket pairs...I would see the flop only to notice I did not flop a set (three of a kind).  So I called $20-$30 pre-flop to find out my cards don't come.  Did that a few times and next thing you know I am rebuying to add more chips to my small stack.  I played one hand and made a huge mistake.  I caught KClubQDiamond under the gun.  I decided not to raise...HUGE MISTAKE.  There were 7 players to the flop.  The flop came:

KDiamond8Heart8Club

I flopped top pair...which was good, but with so many callers it is also likely someone has an 8 too.  I bet $25 into a $35 pot.  I got one caller.  I immediately thought he had an 8 in his hand but wasn't sure.  The turn was:

ADiamond

I decided to check to see if he would bet.  He just checked behind.  The river came a blank, and I decided to bet $30, he raised it up $50 more and I decided to call.  Before the flop I made a big mistake not thinning the field.  On the river I made another big mistake calling the raise.  The only hands that raise on this board are hands that have my top pair good kicker CRUSHED.  It was a standard bet then fold to a raise.  To my demise he turned over AHeart8Spade.  I lost $145 in that one pot, and the other hands...well just history.  Overall I lost $297 on the night...Needless to say I was excited about getting back into the action, but it did not go as I would have liked it to...So much for wishful thinking.  Later!

Gary's Poker Journey...My Best Session Ever

Well today is a day that I normally go and play poker to continue my journey in poker.  I have won a lot of money over the last couple of years playing poker in my spare time.  Every win that I have had in a poker session does not compare to the feeling I have when I have my son in my arms.  He is amazing, my wife is amazing, and they are both great reasons and inspirations for why I do what I do, be it poker, real estate, etc.  Anyway I figured I would share a video of my winnings today for everyone to enjoy!  He will be a monster at the poker table one day...just gotta get him through my baby can read and hooked on phonics first.  Enjoy!!!

Rather Lucky Than Good...

I tried to pick the most appropriate title for this post.  It sums up my entire session last night.  My session really came down to one hand that made the difference.  I went to the casino with $400 and the intention to sit down at the $200-$500 table.  When I got to the casino I had to sit at the $50-$200 and lost $100 over about an hour of play.  After that first hour in they finally opened a $200-$500 table and I took it.  I bought in with my last $300 dollars.  I sat and sat and sat for some more...and then Gary did some sitting and after all that sitting and being patient Gary was only up $50 after 4 hours.  So Gary said..."Let's order some beer!!!"  I bought a Sam Adams Octoberfest...and drank it on an empty stomach.  Drinking & playing poker is something that Gary RARELY does. After having that beer I felt pretty good and caught KDiamondQHeart and I was middle position.  So I decided to raise to $15.  I got 3 callers and then a guy in the blinds decides to go all in for his last $65.  I called and one other person decided to call.  The flop came:

QDiamond7Heart6Heart

The guy who called along with me bet $100 into me the flop. I had top pair and a good kicker so I called.  I knew the only hand that could beat me was AQ or a set which I thought was unlikely.

The turn came AHeart

The guy in early position bet another $100 leaving only $100 behind.  I started thinking and my first reaction was I am beat...he has AQ that is the ONLY hand that bets $100 here...unless he knew the Ace was a scare card for me.  I didn't think he was on that level in terms of thought process wise...he seemed more like a player that played his hand and not the player he was up against.  But Sam Adams Octoberfest told me something different.  What Sam Adams told Gary to do was go all in and represent the flush or pocket Aces and he will fold his last $100 even though the pot is over $700 and he has GREAT ODDS to call.  Unfortunately Gary listened to Sam Adams and shoved all the rest of his chips into the pot...just over $200.  The guy said, "Did you catch your flush?  I only have $100 left I call."  I told him no after he called and then came the River:

2Heart

The guy flipped over his ADiamondQClub (two pair) only to see that I was lucky and sucked out on him for a flush on the river.  After that 4th Heart on the board I had a flush and won the pot.  I was happy because I got lucky but felt bad too because I hate when that happens to me.  The player left and told me nice hand after taking all of his chips.  I must say after last nights session...I would much rather be lucky than good.  I would like to dedicate my $335 profit to Sam Adams!

2 Hands and $400 later...James It's Still All Your Fault!!!

So I tonight I decided to blog about the two hands of a couple hundred hands that sent me home with a loss of $400.  I played a number of hands throughout the night but none of them were big hands or had any major effect on my chip count except the following two hands.

Hand #1:  I was dealt AClubADiamond and I was HAPPY!  I raised in early position to $25.  I got 3 other callers so there was just over $100 in the pot.  The flop came

KDiamond4Club5Spade

I decided to just shove all the rest of my chips into the pot as I only had just over $100 left after the initial raise.  I shoved all in and one guy called my all in bet.  Needless to say he had 4Diamond4Spade which gave him three of a kind.  My best hand before the flop became the worst hand very fast and remained the worst hand through the river.  I said bye bye to my first $200 buy-in and quickly reached into my pocket for my next $200.

Hand #2:  About ten hands later I was dealt KDiamondKHeart again I was excited...I was in the big blind and the guy to my left decided to straddle(he bet $10 before being dealt his cards).  Two players called the straddle bet and I raised it up to $40.  The guy who straddled raised to $125 and the other two guys folded.  I had pocket kings with no intention of folding...NEVER EVER EVER fold KK pre-flop.  I didn't break that rule, and I decided to shove all the rest of my chips in because he would have to call me with any hand he had based on his raise sizing.  JJ, QQ, AK, etc.  I knew he wouldn't fold and I also knew I would get called in this spot with worse hands. So I shipped the rest of my stack which was about $160 into the pot.  He called instantly...we decided to turn our cards over and to my demise...he had ASpadeAHeart.  After the board ran out and I didn't catch 3 of a kind I got up from the table, told the players to have a great night, and told the dealer I was done.

After losing $400 I want everyone to know I would not have played any of these hands differently.  I will put my money in in this situation pretty much 100% of the time.  In the first hand the chances of him hitting a set here are slim, and I already committed to many chips to fold AA in any situation outside of me checking and having a raise and then re-raise happen.  Which is RARE.  The KK vs. AA hand...all I can say is S#!+ happens.  I left the casino happy that I played well, a little bummed I lost $400, but I understand that over time I will win and continue to win consistently.  If you haven't watched my video yet, you may be wondering why I titled this "2 Hands and $400 later...James It's Still All Your Fault!!!"  All I can tell you is watch the dang video...Gary tries hard to keep you entertained and he hopes you are.  That is all for now...until next time.  L8ter!!!
