This Saturday's session was a great session. I played well for majority of the session, I was patient and took advantage of my image at the table. The hands I will share with you will demonstrate that a bit although there are many levels of taking advantage of your image and creating metagame between you and your opponents. We will just scratch the surface here. The first hand was a hand that I caught 9
9
in the hole. I decided to raise with this as it is a pretty good hand to raise with to slim the field down. Prior to getting this hand I had been raising several times in late position with nothing just taking the blinds or winning the pot with a continuation bet (AKA c-bet this is auto betting on the flop after raising pre-flop). The player to my left is a very good player so he decided to call. He had been looking at me every time I raised in late position because he knew I did not have a hand every time I was raising to steal the limpers money etc. So he took a stand. I had 9
9
and raised pre-flop to $15. There were two callers and $45 in the pot...the flop came:
K62 rainbow
I c-bet $30 and the guy I started to get a since that he was picking up on what I was doing raised to $90. Now I figured he was playing back at me because I have been very active. The reason I thought he was making a play was because he had nothing to be afraid of on this flop, and if he had me beat he would keep me bluffing by just calling my c-bet. I know this because I have played with him for 3 weeks straight and know he knows this and may think I don't. Now I did not want to take a stand with pocket 9's OOP (Out of Position) so I folded. I folded knowing that I would be keeping an eye on him in late position to see if he is making plays on me. Well an orbit later I was in late position and was dealt AA. I raised it up to $15 and I got 2 callers. The flop came:
K82 rainbow
I did my routine c-bet on this dry board (no draws out there) and bet $30 into a $45 pot. The opponent I was keeping my eye on decided to call. I knew at this point that he was going to try to float by c-bet. Which means call my flop bet of $30 and see if I check the turn to him. I had a good feeling this is what he was doing so I did not disappoint him...I checked to him on the turn when it came:
5
After checking to him he bet $60 and I called. The river was another blank and I decided to lead with $100 which was a mistake. Why? you might ask...it was a mistake because I went against my initial read. My initial read was he was going to float and bluff on the turn. If he was bluffing I should have checked to him on the river and hope he bluffed at the pot again. After I bet $100 he folded and said I think you have me. If he had a King he would have called getting 3 to 1 on his money. I knew he had nothing and I had made a mistake in betting the river. This is a leak that I am currently working on in my game. What great poker players do is as the hand goes on they continue to narrow their opponents range down. They do this by putting their opponents on a range of hands based on what happens during the hand and what hands have been previously played which would develop the metagame (mind game played between poker players explained at the end of this post). When a great player has a read he stays with that read throughout the hand and does not change it mid stream based on a large bet etc. Well I didn't do that on the river, I changed my mind on the river an said well if he has a king I should bet here to get max value. But I didn't put him on a king, I put him on complete air (i.e. small pocket pair that missed or suited connectors that missed). With his air he was making a play. I should have kept going with my read as I would have probably won another $100-$200 when he bluffed the river.
The last hand I want to discuss is a hand that I took advantage of my table image on. After the hands above I decided to calm down a bit with my raising in late position because I could tell my opponents were starting to get curious and were starting to call me lighter (with a larger range of hands). I played VERY tight for the next hour and then I started to get bored so I wanted to switch gears and start stealing pots again. I raised in middle position with 7
8
to $20. I got 4 callers and the flop came:
Q63
I c-bet $50 and 3 players folded and the lady on my right called. I immediately put her on a range of hands. 45, KQ, AQ, QJ, QT, 77-JJ, and maybe some gut shot straight draws. Most of this range beats the crap out of my 7
8
so I knew the only way to win was bet her off her hand. She was a decent tight player and was relatively new to the table. She was there a few minutes prior to me switching gears and playing extremely tight. Based on this I knew she would be thinking I am tight and I don't bet or raise without a GOOD hand. My plan for the hand was bet the turn, and if she called the turn bet the river all-in and make her fold her top pair which I knew she was capable of doing. So when the turn came:
J
I bet $100. She thinks for a bit and decides to fold the best hand. I started this session with $200 and left with $602. Not a bad session at all. Check out the pictures at the end of the post of my starting stack and ending stack.
Now I will explain metagame...metagame is when poker players start to develop patterns on each other and after these patterns are developed over a period of time (usually several hours of playing together) they begin to play hands differently they would normally play them to throw the other player off. Now this cannot take place unless the two players involved are thinking players. If you try to develop metagame with a player that is new to poker it usually cannot be done, because their focus is on their own hand and how strong it is. There are many levels of thinking in poker. David Slansky a great poker author talks about these levels in his book No-Limit Hold 'em Theory and Practice.
Level 0: I know nothing
Level 1: What do I have?
Level 2: What does my opponent have?
Level 3:What does my opponent think I have?
Level 4:What does my opponent think that I think they have?
Level 5:What does my opponent think that I think they think I have?
Many players don't get past Level 1, and many of those players are not winning players. They are usually break even and most likely losing players. When you get past level 1 and begin to get into level 3, 4, and 5 poker begins to become a game where the cards don't matter as much because you can remain several steps ahead of your opponent and manipulate every move they make. Hence me making my opponent fold when I knew she had the best hand. I am definitely not an expert at this but as time goes on I am getting better and better at manipulating my opponents into giving me their money when I have the nuts (the best hand possible) and when I have air (nothing at all). Did I mention I love this game? Anyway here are the stacks...until next time.
